There were only 140,000 by the end of WWII.* Its a pity, thousands of years of culture destroyed by a bloody demagogue.

*To be fair to the Arabs, the real decrease in the Jewish population didn't occur till the Mongol invasions.Lee Ratnerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08139895689217213860noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4008006782907969381.post-27495279355506727732010-08-30T21:49:20.297+03:002010-08-30T21:49:20.297+03:00Did you see this? ...

Thanks for the history lesson, which I've now incorporated in the text of the post itself (most readers don't read comments).Yaacovhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12835192312242961481noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4008006782907969381.post-29549401004272170612010-08-30T16:03:14.848+03:002010-08-30T16:03:14.848+03:00Wow! The secret of its manufacture has been lost, but it's both hard and flexible, and it was used to produce quite beautiful patterned blades. In this form it's called Damascene (i.e., "from Damascus") steel. It would only have been used for weapons, as the Talmud says, because it was enormously expensive.

So, this sugya tells us that Jews were the ones who imported the billets of wootz from India to Persian Babylon! I wonder if this is generally known?Joe in Australianoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4008006782907969381.post-15382850245177789722010-08-30T14:44:27.141+03:002010-08-30T14:44:27.141+03:00The Zoroastrian Persians at the time, where always...The Zoroastrian Persians at the time, where always friendly to the Jews.

The times have changed since then.NormanFhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03365459073293643108noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4008006782907969381.post-26080955920289109722010-08-30T13:41:42.316+03:002010-08-30T13:41:42.316+03:00"Rav Ashi explains: we sell [Indian sheet iro..."Rav Ashi explains: we sell [Indian sheet iron] only to the Persians, who protect us."

Indeed times have changed - nice catch, Yakov.AKUSnoreply@blogger.com
