The Last Surviving Member of the First Knesset
... Was Tawfik Toubi, who began his political life as a member of the Palestinian Communist Party, and served for four decades as a communist Knesset member. He passed away over the weekend, the last of his generation.
In another irony, the last signer of Israel's Declaration of Independence to die was also an anti-Zionist Communist, Meir Vilner. Is there something symbolic here?
There were never that many Jewish Communists in Israel. And the most influential Marxists in the country are post Zionist modernists instead of Stalinists - Israel's Communist Party never got around to repudiating the Soviet dictator.
