No-one Remembers the Machtergreifung

Hitler came to power 80 years ago today. I've just posted a brief rumination on this over at the other blog.

  1. The Nazi seizure of power was a historical accident; it was not inevitable. Any given set of factors could have derailed Hitler's ascension as Reich Chancellor. On the one hand, his unparalleled political gifts facilitated his rise in 1933 but more important was the failure of his opponents to unite against him that recommended him as a candidate. What looks to us as destined in hindsight wasn't all that clear in those days.
