Hanging Judge

The front page of Yediot Achronot, our most popular newspaper, has a story about one Judge Richard Goldstone. Apparently the man was a judge in South Africa's Apartheid regime, and in that capacity he sent dozens of blacks to the gallows, and others to be lashed.

Interesting, isn't it.

Update: There's no link to the Yediot Achronot story, but Silke found a description of at at the Jerusalem Post, here.

2nd update: Asaf found a link to the story in Hebrew, here.

Indeed it is interesting with a dash of hypocrisy and a good dose of disgusting.

This, if confirmed, should be made widely known, at least to watch the ensuing cognitive dissonance it will provoke in certain quarters...

any chance we can get a link/picture?

And, of course, that dissonance will be eventually resolved through the usual rationalization that jews are ever opportunistic parasites, blah, blah, blah-fake-Ibrahim style. Or maybe that Goldstone redeemed himself, now being in the holy-club of Smearsheimer's righteous jews. Etc.

A picture or link would be nice, considering ynet has no mention of the story at all, in English or (as far as I could tell) in Hebrew.

here is the Jerusalem Post with the story

more from googling Silke*)

Tikkun Magazine whoever that is wants to honor Goldstone
http://www.jewishvoicesnj.org/news/2010-05-05/World_News/Tikkun_magazine_to_honor_Goldstone.html

and Al Jazeera is aghast that Goldstone was harrassed - I think it is the "bad" Al Jazeerah though

*) there were no special skills necessary, just all on the same day "tickled" me

Tikkun magazine is a fruitcake liberal magazine masquerading as a "liberal Jewish" magazine. (Its last issue featured an article stating how Israel's policies are "entrenching" worldwide anti-Semitism.) It does give out a guide to celebrating Christmas, so its Jewishness is about as legitimate as Madonna's.

Thanks for the link to jpost, Silke.

When the Goldstone Report first came out I remember in a few places reading some comments by older South African Jews, both in Israel and South Africa, who pointed out Judge Goldstone activities as a judge during the apartheid regime. I guess that finally someone has done some investigating.

You know what they say.... those who sit in judgment of others are not always who they seem to be.

So it is for Judge Goldstone.

South Africa's Jewish community leadership and most of those affiliated with Jewish organizations were open supporters of the South African apartheid regime and facilitated the close ties between apartheid South Africa and apartheid Israel. South African Jews were elected to high positions such as mayor of Johannesburg and Sun City was a regular vacation spot for vacationing Israelis as well as American Jews such as the Klinghoffer family which was returning from a vacation there on the Achille Lauro when it was highjacked and he was thrown overboard. The Israeli Zim line kept a regular shipping schedule between Durban and Haifa and when Israel signed the first free trade agreement with the US, the South African Financial Times ran an illustration of an hour glass that showed South African products being filtered through Israel to the United States because that is what the IFTA allowed to happen.

AKUS links on CiF-Watch to a nugget (sorry but can't resist that one) of a Goldstone piece at CiF - my "findings" are in the comment section there. The gist of it is:
Thank you Israel for refusing to cooperate with the man, you put in a big stop gap not only to Goldstone but to that whole HRC charade.

'Twould appear that for the sages at Tikkun magazine, Goldstone's inspired (but by what?) Report is the ultimate in Teshuva.

In a similar vein, Iran, Hezbullah, Syria, Hamas, and the Palestinian Authority must remain above reproach (well, maybe the PA could be criticized for considering not talking to Israel directly).

And who knows? Maybe, they'll be next year's Tikkun prize-winners....

Barry Meislin said...

Here's someone else who's been trying, over the past several years, to do some serious, serious Teshuva.

But don't count on him getting any prizes from Tikkun....

(Although they really should give him something substantial---or at least honorary---since the damage he's done to the State of Israel, not to mention the field of historiography, is pretty devastating.)

Morris has a very interesting sounding article in the TNR but it is only for subscribers and they don't have as yet anything else than total "marriage" on offer
http://www.tnr.com/article/books-and-arts/the-party-line
here is the London Times review of the book which makes me regret even more that Morris' piece can't be bought individually
http://entertainment.timesonline.co.uk/tol/arts_and_entertainment/books/book_reviews/article6857652.ece

but if you are interested in "new" historians who are still all into "new" I "recommend" Tom Segev - I heard a lot from him on the radio when he promoted his book on the 6-day-war (his German is effortless) and according to him Israelis got it all wrong. What bothered me most was his style of looking down on "folks" who were afraid because they didn't have his superior wisdom (after the fact). - a historian here or there claiming that all the others got it all wrong wouldn't matter so much, wouldn't it synch with the overall majority media chatter - i.e. they (the Israelis) exaggerated then and now they do the same with Iran or something like that.

I kind of find the first one really satisfying
you should have heard the wobbly sounding old holocaust survivor whom they had brain-washed to serve as poster-child for the media campaign in Germany - for that alone he deserves to be depicted like that
