A.B.Yehoshua to Gideon Levy

I have dedicated posts to Gideon Levy twice since this war began. At the very beginning I said he's off the wall but I'm proud we have him, and I distinguished between him and the Guardianists who live far away and can safely pontificate with no danger of paying any price when they prove wrong. As the war went on I again focused on Levy, and pointed out that his primary motivation is not truth, nor morality, but hatred.

A.B Yehoshua has lost his patience with Gideon Levy, and says so in an open letter published in Haaretz. Yehoshua, for those who may not know, is the oldest of our "three writers", an unofficial group which also includes Amos Oz and David Grossman, probably the country's top three novelists, who band to gather from time to time to comment on political events. Their comments, of course, are always from the left; all three identify with the Palestinian plight, look forward to the dismantling of the settlements, and make public statements in favor of a Palestinian State in the 1967 borders. All three have engaged personally in numerous dialogue exercises with Palestinians and have been doing so for decades.

Yehoshua is supposed to be in Gideon Levy's corner. But he isn't. He brings the full force of his trade - a wordsmith - to explain why.
The doleful thought sometimes crosses my mind that it is not the children of Gaza or of Israel that you are pining for, but only for your own private conscience. Because if you are truly concerned about the death of our children and theirs, you would understand the present war - not in order to uproot Hamas from Gaza but to induce its followers to understand, and regrettably in the only way they understand in the meantime, that they must stop the firing unilaterally, stop hoarding missiles for a bitter and hopeless war to destroy Israel, and above all for the sake of their children in the future, so they will not die in another pointless adventure.

After all, now, for the first time in Palestinian history, after the Ottoman, British, Egyptian, Jordanian and Israeli conquests, part of the Palestinians has gained a first and I hope not a last piece of land on which they are to maintain a full and independent government. And if they start building, developing and pursuing social endeavors, even according to Islamic religious law, they will prove to the whole world, and especially to us, that the moment we terminate the occupation they will be ready to live in peace with their surroundings, free to do as they wish, but also responsible for their deeds.
Read the whole thing.

A thousand thanks for pointing to this article.

I've always loved A.B., and
this article is just one more proof.

Let's see how our leftist friends here around will decide between one leftist Israeli author and the other.

FROM CAROL HERMAN

This is a good test for FREE SPEECH. In other words? If you don't hear things you hate to hear, then free speech has been dealt a blow, and all that exists is a sense that you don't need truth.

Ethics be damned.

On the other hand? Point to any religion out there; how far does it get if ETHICS aren't in tow?

Your belly button is not the center of the universe.

ANd, really, who cares?

Through all the lying that's been going on you might recognize this: NO ONE HAS A REPUTATION AS A "MUST READ."

Alas, it would be so much nicer to see an H.L. Mencken's talent in full array; than the kaka that passes for writers these days.

But ya can't have everything.

You can only hope that in another generation, the values will change, again.

Every generation needs to sort out fact from fiction, anyway.

And, it's GOOD THAT AMERICANS give no credence to academic degrees! So, just having "a credential" will turn into a big waste of time.

On the other hand? If you want a good laugh. This wonderful book about FDR's first 100 days, (THE DEFINING MOMENT), states that FDR had a strong mother. And, then it rattles off the list. To be effective enough to get elected, you'll see STRONG MOTHERS standing behind, and up for their sons.

At least Dubya had one, too.

See? Jonathan Adler wrote all about it! Capturing the essence. Making him a pleasure to read.

For TRUTH doesn't get better than that!
